FIRST EDITION. 4°, contemporary quarter morocco over marbled boards (minor wear to extremities), flat spine (faded to tan) divided into five compartments by gilt fillets, "miscellanea" lettered in gilt in second compartment from head, "vol 2" in gilt in fourth compartment, some text block edges tinted blue-green, others sprinked blue-green. In very good condition. 40 pp. *** FIRST EDITION. There is an undated edition, without place or printer, but probably Lisbon, 1827, of 30 pp., as well as a French translation which appeared in Paris the same year. There was also an anonymous reply by Luís António Carlos Furtado de Mendonça, As minhas observações á carta do doutor Abrantes, Lison: Imprensa de Eugenio Augusto, 1828.Bernardo José d'Abrantes e Castro (1771-1833) held a degree in medicine from Coimbra University. He became royal physician and físico-mor of the Portuguese army. In 1809 he got into trouble with the Inquisition and imprisoned on charges of "Jacobinsim" and being a freemason. Later he was Portuguese ambassador to the Court of St. James, and is perhaps most famous as co-editor with Vicente Pedro Nolasco Pereira da Cunha of the important emigré journal O Investigador Portuguez em Inglaterra. In 1827 he was offered, but refused, the position of Councillor of State. When he died in 1833 Abrantes e Castro left a library of over 4,000 volumes with an appraised value of over 1 million réis.William à Court, 1st Baron Heytesbury (11 July 1779 31 May 1860), diplomat and Conservative politician, was British Ambassador to Portugal from 1824 to 1828. Joaquim César de Figanière e Morão, minister plenipotenciary to the United States, and his son C.H.S. de la Figaniere, consul-general, were accused of behaving improperly in handling Mechas's legacy.Joaquim César de Figanière e Morão (Lisbon, 1798-Brooklyn, 1866) was a member of the royal council and a commendador of the Ordem de Christo and of N.S. da Conceição. He served as Portuguese Minister to Brazil, and from 1840 to 1846 as minister to the United States (where he worked to remove trade barriers to the importation of Portuguese wines). His published works range from diplomacy and trade to natural history. He was an honorary member of the Instituto Historico do Brasil as well as the Academia de Sciencias e Litteratura de Maryland, the Sociedade Historica de Philadelphia, the Instituto Nacional de Washington. (These last three names are taken from Innocêncio; we are not sure to which American institutions they correspond.) These works were part of a polemic raging over the efficacy of homeopathic medicine. Gomes surveys the use of and literature about homeopathy and animal magnetism (mesmerism) across Europe.The author (1806-1877), son of a physician of the same name, was a professor of medicine and a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Lisbon. He studied medicine in Paris and accompanied the Duque de Palmela on his expedition to Terceira. Costa Cabral (1803-1889), born in Fornos de Algodres, trained as a lawyer at Coimbra University and was later appointed as a judge. He was a liberal, with a rather conservative, authoritarian bent. Appointed Governor of Lisbon in 1836, he bacame a confidant of Queen Maria II. He used force to put down radical mobs in Lisbon (the Rossio massacre), restored diplomatic relations with the Vatican and re-introduced the more conservative Carta constitutcional. Following an 1842 coup d'état, he was appointed as Minister and Secretary for Royal State Affairs (more or less Interior minister) in 1843. In 1846 famine led to the peasant revolt of Maria da Fonte in the north of Portugal, and he was removed from office. He fled to England but was restored to power in 1848.
