Er wurde von Francis Bacon ge- und von Salvador Dalí bemalt, gestaltete mit Andy Warhol Tagebücher, und mit Truman Capote und den Rolling Stones ging er zusammen auf Tour. Als Modefotograf nahm er Vogue-Stars wie Veruschka mit nach Afrika und brachte andere - am bekanntesten ist Iman - in die Vereinigten Staaten. In den frühen 1960er Jahren fuhr Beard nach Kenia, lernte die Autorin Tania Blixen kennen und schätzen und kaufte ein Stück Land neben dem ihrem. Beard erlebte die Bevölkerungsexplosion in Kenia mit, das Ende der Ressourcen und die Bedrohung vieler Tierarten (darunter die Elefanten von Tsavo, die zu zehntausenden inmitten einer ausgelaugten Landschaft starben) und dokumentierte diese Erfahrungen in seinen Tagebüchern, Fotografien und Collagen. Mit seinen einzigartigen und manchmal schockierenden Werken arbeitete er gegen den Zeitgeist; er zeigte die verendeten Körper, wie sie waren, und beschrieb seine Eindrücke sorgfältig auf der Schreibmaschine und mit der Hand. Beard benutzt seine Fotografien als Leinwand - Kontaktabzüge, Zeitungsschnipsel, Postkarten und andere gesammelte Objekte ordnet er neben- und übereinander an und schmückt sie mit seiner akkuraten Handschrift, Zeichnungen und Tierblut aus. 2006 veröffentlichte TASCHEN die limitierte Ausgabe dieses Buchs, das Beards uvre in all seinen Facetten widerspiegelt. Die vom Künstler signierte zweibändige Collector´s Edition war sofort ausverkauft und ist heute ein begehrtes Sammlerstück.
