New Delhi, India: Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd., 2017. A duke temporarily removes himself from governing his city-state, deputizing a member of his administration, Angelo, to enforce the laws more rigorously. Angelo chooses as his first victim Claudio, condemning him to death because he impregnated Juliet before their marriage. Claudios sister Isabella, who is entering a convent, pleads for her brothers life. Angelo attempts to extort sex from her, but Isabella preserves her chastity. The duke, in disguise, eavesdrops as she tells her brother about Angelos behavior, then offers to ally himself with her against Angelo. Modern responses to the play show how it can be transformed by its reception in present culture to evoke continuing fascination. To some, the duke (the government) seems meddlesome; to others, he is properly imposing moral standards. Angelo and Isabellas encounter exemplifies sexual harassment. Others see a womans right to control her body in Isabellas choice between her virginity and her brothers life. Printed Pages: 102.. Softcover. New., Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd., 2017, 6, Cambridge University Press, 2008. Softcover. New. This new edition of Shakespeareâs most celebrated war play points to the many inconsistencies in the presentation of Henry V. Andrew Gurrâs substantial introduction explains the play as a reaction to the decade of war which preceded its writing, and analyses the playâs double vision of Henry as both military hero and self-seeking individual. Professor Gurr shows how the patriotic declarations of the Chorus are contradicted by the playâs action. He places the playâs more controversial sequences in the context of Elizabethan thought, in particular the studies of the laws and morality of war written in the years before Henry V. He also studies the variety of language and dialect in the play. The appendices summarise Shakespeareâs debt to his dramatic and historical sources, while the stage history shows how subsequent centuries have received and adapted the play on the stage and in film.
