Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - PREFACE -- Pindaric studies confront the enquirer in our day with a paradox. Influential voices declare that no good is to be had from the Pindaric scholarship of the German Enlightenment and its Idealist afterglow. Yet on the other hand the critical principles, such as the formal analysis of poetry as a literary construct taking its place within a tradition, which are supposed to replace the outmoded views of that period are themselves often derived from it. Even T. S. Eliot, after all, wrote his Harvard dissertation about the leading British disciple of Hegel, F. H. Bradley. -- This book asserts in ks first chapter that the problem of understanding Pindar was posed correctly by the age of Boeckh and Dissen. By giving an account of the attack made on Boeckh by the Danish scholar A. B. Drachmann at the end of the nineteenth century it aims both to revive that debate and to set it in ajuster perspective. Boeckh’s “objective unity,” interpreted as the poet’s apprehension of his matter, and his “subjective unity,” what he did with his matter to make a poem, are in fact useful tools for grasping the totality of what the poet achieved. Schleiermacher’s doctrine of the Keimentschluss, the seminal moment when fancy takes on form, is another important concept of this period. So is his theory of the unity of symbol and play in great art. And Schleiermacher was Boeckh’s teacher. -- These and other stimulating suggestions have in our view been unfairly neglected. The classical scholar who overlooks them runs the risk of overlooking some of the most fruitful criticism of his modern colleagues, who have not been so inattentive to the history of ideas.
