"The New York love story of a beautiful heiress and a wealthy young architect, captured in a famous John Singer Sargent painting. In Love, Fiercely Jean Zimmerman re-creates the glittering world of Edith Minturn and Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes. Contemporaries of the Astors and Vanderbilts, they grew up together along the shores of bucolic Staten Island, linked by privilege--her grandparents built the world's fastest clipper ship, his family owned most of Murray Hill. Theirs was a world filled with mansions, balls, summer homes, and extended European vacations. Newton became a passionate preserver of New York history and published the finest collection of Manhattan maps and views in a six-volume series. Edith became the face of the age when Daniel Chester French sculpted her for Chicago's Columbian Exposition, a colossus intended to match the Statue of Liberty's grandeur. Together Edith and Newton battled on behalf of New York's poor and powerless as reformers who never themselves wanted for anything. Through it all, they sustained a strong-rooted marriage. From the splendid cottages of the Berkshires to the salons of 1890s Paris, Love, Fiercely is the real story of a world long relegated to fiction. / Jean Zimmerman is the author of four previous books, including The Women of the House: How a Colonial She-Merchant Built a Mansion, a Fortune and a Dynasty. Charles William Eliot (March 20, 1834 - August 22, 1926) was an American academic who was selected as Harvard's president in 1869. He transformed the college into the pre-eminent American university. Eliot served until 1909, the longest term as president in the university's history. The Harvard Universal Classics, originally known as Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf, is a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot and first published in 1909. Eliot had stated in speeches that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. The publisher P. F. Collier and Son saw an opportunity and challenged Eliot to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works, and the Harvard Classics was the result. Eliot worked for one year with William A. Neilson, a professor of English; Eliot determined the works to be included and Neilson selected the specific editions and wrote introductory notes. Each volume had 400-450 pages, and the included texts are "so far as possible, entire works or complete segments of the world's written legacies." The collection was widely advertised by Collier and Son, in Collier's and elsewhere, with great success., P. F. Collier & Son, 1910, 2.5, Norfolk: Simon Finch Rare Books Ltd, 2003. Original wrappers. One hundred treasures are featured, each pictured in full colour with accompanying text written by Iain Sharp and grouped in sections: Auckland, New Zealand, book arts, travel, literature, science. Among the treasures shown are a "First Folio of Shakespeare", a six-page catechism - the first work printed in New Zealand, illuminated manuscripts, maps of early Auckland, avant garde private press productions, Maori-language manuscripts, Isaac Newton's Opticks, letters from Florence Nightingale to Sir George Grey, records of Limbs and Mercury Theatre. At the heart of the collection is the Sir George Grey donation which was the foundation of the library in 1887; an iconic item from the Grey Manuscripts, for example, is the score and lyrics of 'God Defend New Zealand'.The lively and informative text and the stunning pictures make this book a treasure in itself. While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. While working to solve the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci -- clues visible for all to see -- yet ingeniously disguised by the painter. Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion -- an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others. In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match w... Source: Publisher., Doubleday, 2003, 4, Berkeley: University of California Press, 1999. Softcover . She earned an MFA in writing from the Columbia University School of the Arts and has published her poetry widely in literary magazines. "While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless powerbroker who seems to anticipate their every move. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's ancient secret -- and an explosive historical truth -- will be lost forever. THE DA VINCI CODE heralds the arrival of a new breed of lightning-paced, intelligent thriller--utterly unpredictable right up to its stunning conclusion. / DAN BROWN is the bestselling author of Digital Fortress, Angels & Demons, and Deception Point. She earned an MFA in writing from the Columbia University School of the Arts and has published her poetry widely in literary magazines.
