I undertook the task of editing the first volume as a sort of experiment. After communicating with many correspondents through the country, the idea then in view was considerably modified; and the heartiness with which the original project was received by gentlemen of marked distinction in their respective departments induced me to aim at something higher, not to say more ambitious, than a mere collection of light fugitive sketches.
