ABOUT:
Winner of the greatest number of design awards of any architectural firm in New South Wales; producer of a diverse body of work embracing planning, architecture, conservation and urban design spanning more than 50 years; holder of impeccably high standards alongside a strong and continuing concern for ecological sustainability - Allen Jack + Cottier has done it all so quietly, with such finesse, such respect for quality and professionalism. Allen Jack Cattier started in 1952, when John Allen opened his practice as a sole practitioner in a flat in the building next to his parents' house in Edgecliff, Sydney, Russell Jack joined Allen in 1956 and they proceeded to develop the architectural firm that is such a success today. Running deeply throughout their work is a humanistic concern for all people, not just their clients, and their passion for buildings that enrich the human experience. The freedom that the company has always allowed its architects and designers, and its longstanding commitment to teaching and fostering the development of its younger team members, has paid rich dividends for the practice and the community as a whole. Keith Cottier became a partner and has been a driving force in the company since 1965, maintaining and extending the firm's reputation, and gaining the profession's recognition when he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in 2001, Keith's achievements in Australian architecture were also more recently recognised by his appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2004 Australia Day Honours. Magill Estate, pictured on the front cover, is one of Allen Jack Cottier's major achievements. This and many other buildings and development projects designed by the company are the focus of this book. It is a story closely linked to the development of Australian architecture itself.
