It had been devised for him about 1516 by the humanist scholar Ludovico Marliano. It was an ingenious adaptation of the story of the pillars of Hercules which marked the bounds of the classical world. In the well-known scene of the The Choice of Hercules the hero had opted for a life of virtue and labour. For the tenth of his twelve Labours, the securing of the oxen of King Geryon, he had to sail along the river Okeanos to the extreme west. There he set up the two pillars and, tired by his exertions, he inscribed them with the words Ne plus ultra (Not any further). These pillars were afterwards identified with the mountains on either side of the Straits of Gibraltar, at Calpe (Gibraltar) and Abyla (Ceuta), or at Gades (Cadiz).
