Originally not thought to have suffient potential to be a film actress, she appeared on the stage in 1935 (her first name was misspelled in the playbill as "Vivien") and following excellent reviews was signed to a film contract by Alexander Korda. Her film roles in England were well received and in 1939 landed one of the most coveted roles in movie history, that of Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone With The Wind", for which she had been considered a "dark horse" because of her British accent.
