Verschwunden ist auch der Vater, ein ehemaliger Soldat aus den USA. Und nun hat Ada Harris die Idee, diesen Vater in dem großen, unbekannten Amerika zu suchen, damit der ernste kleine Henry ein Zuhause bekommt und das Lachen wieder lernt. Mit Pfiffigkeit und Tatkraft und mit alten Freunden aus Paris gelingt es ihr, den kleinen Henry an Bord des Schiffes und nach Amerika hinein zu schmuggeln. Aber ihr unverwüstlich erscheinender Optimismus schwindet, als sie allmählich erkennen muss, dass sie Unmögliches auf sich genommen hat. Es gelingt ihr zunächst nicht, den Vater zu finden; aber der Vater ist doch da, und zwar ganz in der Nähe. Und als Ada Harris erfährt, wer es ist, wird sie in helle Verzweiflung gestürzt. Schließlich ist die Mühe der tapferen Frau doch nicht umsonst gewesen, und den kleinen Henry erwartet eine glückliche Zukunft. Aber wie es soweit kommt, das muss man selber lesen, bis man wieder mit Ada Harris auf der Queen Elizabeth nach England zurückreist. ?Wieder ist man gefesselt von der klugen Menschlichkeit dieses passionierten Erzählers.
