Since 1877 he has been assistant professor of Old Testament exegesis and Semitic languages at the University of Berlin. He was the foremost Christian authority in Germany on Talmudic and rabbinic literature, and studied rabbinics under Steinschneider. Since the reappearance of anti-Semitism in Germany Strack has been the champion of the Jews against the attacks of such men as Hofprediger Stöcker, Professor Röhling, and others. In 1885 Strack became the editor of "Nathanael. Zeitschrift für die Arbeit der Evangelischen Kirche an Israel," which is published at Berlin; and in 1883 he founded the Institutum Judaicum, which aims at the conversion of Jews to Christianity. In the beginning of his career the Prussian government sent Strack to St. Petersburg to examine the Bible manuscripts there; on this occasion he examined also the antiquities of the Firkovich collection, which he declared to be forgeries. Apres une presentation generale de la litterature hippiatrique, l'auteur elucide des questions liees a la composition du Corpus hippiatricorum graecorum. L'interet est principalement porte sur les differentes recensions d'un de ses abreges, l'Epitome, et sur sa place par rapport au Corpus hippiatricorum. Ainsi est-on amene a mieux discerner l'histoire de ce traite et celle des deux seuls manuscrits illustres. Vient ensuite un chapitre consacre a l'etude minutieuse de ces deux temoins, le Leidensus Vossianus graecus Q. 50 et le Parisinus graecus 2244. Paleographie et codicologie s'en melent, qui revisent bien des opinions recues sur l'origine des manuscrits. Un re-examen des miniatures des deux temoins est alors possible. Par-dela analyses stylistique et iconographique, trop souvent attachees a la quete absolue de l'archetype, l'auteur analyse les rapports texte/image pour etablir, en definitive, le modus operandi des imagiers et determiner les fonctions concretes pour lesquelles les figures ont ete pensees et concues. About the author: Jassuda Bédarrides (1804-1882) was a French lawyer and politician. He started his career as a lawyer, becoming the first Jewish lawyer in Aix-en-Provence. He wrote several books about jurisprudence. He also served as bâtonnier. A supporter of the Republic, he embarked upon a career in politics. He served as the Mayor of Aix-en-Provence from March 12, 1848 to May 18, 1849. As such, he became the first Jewish Mayor of this city. In April 1848, he planted the Tree of Freedom on the Place des Precheurs to celebrate the French Republic. During his tenure, he also commissioned the construction of new buildings for factory workers and a new slaughterhouse (demolished and now the Pasino), as well as the restoration of a lycee and of a museum. He also served on the General Council. Later, he served as a member of the Consistory of Marseille.
