Rudolf Habelt Verlag, Bonn, 1953. 121p. Original blue gilt titled cloth. Pages yellowed. Diss. Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main. 'It is impossible (...) to do justice to the author's many penetrating views and his really constructive approach to the criticism of Seneca's drama. Familiarity with the discussions of foreign scholars may have led him to qualify some of his overconfident statements about chronology and about Seneca's aims and intentions (...). But this type of investigation into the technique, the style, and the various problems presented by the text of the individual tragedies might well set a precedent. The time has come to study the whole corpus of Seneca's plays, not as weak imitations of Greek drama, not as 'suasoriae' or 'declamationes', but as Seneca's original adaptation of the dramatic genre to fill a new need and to perform a new function, that of creating for the Roman public heroic types to exemplify the Stoic conception of man and of the human condition.' (BERTHE M. MARTI in The Journal of Roman Studies, 1955, pp.233-34)., United States: University of California Press. 1910. Black and white maps and illustrations, index, bibliography, appendices, notes, a very good copy. This rich cultural history set in Punjab examines a little-studied body of popular literature to illustrate both the durability of a vernacular literary tradition and the limits of colonial dominance in British India. Farina Mir asks how qisse, a vibrant genre of epics and romances, flourished in colonial Punjab despite British efforts to marginalize the Punjabi language. She explores topics including Punjabi linguistic practices, print and performance, and the symbolic content of qisse. She finds that although the British denied Punjabi language and literature almost all forms of state patronage, the resilience of this popular genre came from its old but dynamic corpus of stories, their representations of place, and the moral sensibility that suffused them. Her multidisciplinary study reframes inquiry into cultural formations in late-colonial north India away from a focus on religious communal identities and nationalist politics and toward a widespread, ecumenical, and place-centered poetics of belonging in the region. ., University of California Press, 1910, London, Published by the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies at the Office of the Society, 1984-1985.
