In einer Pelletieranlage (Pelletpresse) werden die Pellets geformt. Das Material wird unter hohem Druck durch eine Stahlmatrize (Rund- oder Flachmatrize) mit Bohrungen im gewünschten Pelletdurchmesser (je nach Matrize 6 bis 10 mm) gepresst. Durch den Druck findet eine Erwärmung statt, die das im Holz enthaltene Lignin erhitzt und verflüssigt, so dass es als Bindemittel fungiert. Unter Umständen ist eine Zugabe von weiterem Bindemittel (Stärke oder Melasse) mit Anteilen von 0, 2 bis 2 % notwendig. Beim Austreten aus der Matrize schneidet ein Abstreifmesser die Stränge zu Pellets der gewünschten Länge (10 bis 30 mm). Der Energieaufwand bei der Pelletherstellung beträgt üblicherweise bei Verwendung von trockenem Restholz ca. 2, 7 % des Energiegehaltes.
