A critical analysis of "Things fall apart" by Chinua Achebe - Taschenbuch

2013, ISBN: 9783656828211

[ED: Taschenbuch], [PU: GRIN Verlag GmbH], Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Literature - Basics, University of Alexandria (Faculty of Arts (English Dept.)), language: English, abstract: Throughout History there has been a desire for main stream white culture to explore and expand to new areas with many different objectives in mind. Many were looking for new lands that had untold riches while others were spreading cultural or religious beliefs in an attempt to gain support for their beliefs. Sometimes foreign societies were welcomed because they brought with them new technologies and ideas to improve the natives' lives. But it was just as likely that these new ideas would have negative effects causing many people's lives to change forever. Things Fall Apart(1958) by Chinua Achebe was a perfect example of what effect new ideas and technology can have on societies that have been isolated for generations and have created a unique culture and society because of this exclusion and segregation. 'The white man is very clever. He came quietly and peaceably with his religion. We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay. Now he has won our brothers, and our clan can no longer act like one. He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart.' The protagonist's pride was bruised when he went back to his homeland and found that his tribe had changed vastly. His people's new beliefs, customs, culture, religion, and society were foreign to him because they adjusted over time to the Christians' ways. His world was literally turned upside-down. The fact is, although some missionaries may have had an honest intention to bring 'salvation' to the Ibo, British policy in colonizing Africa tends to suggest that the real reason for introducing Christianity was to make the natives easier to subvert, all the while giving the operation an air of legitimacy. The colonists had much to gain from a colonized Africa, including abundant natural resources and workers to tend farms and chopped trees for the Queen. The British moved into Nigeria with a combination of government control, religious mission, and economic incentive. The British operated an efficient administrative system and introduced a form of British culture to Nigeria. They also sent many capable young Nigerians to England for education. The experience of Nigerians who lived overseas in the years preceding, during, and after World War II gave rise to a class of young, educated nationalists who agitated for independence from Great Britain., [SC: 0.00]
