Wie ihre Schwesterkirchen versuchte auch sie, unter dem Druck der DDR-Kirchenpolitik die innere Geschlossenheit zu erhalten und einen Weg durch die SEDDiktatur jenseits von „Anpassung“ und „Verweigerung“ zu finden. Dieser „Mecklenburger Weg“ wurde wesentlich bestimmt durch die beiden Landesbischöfe Dr. Heinrich Rathke (1971-1984) und Christoph Stier (1984-1996). Sie waren bestrebt, dem Eindringen fremder Interessen Widerstand entgegen zu bringen, indem sie einen verbindlichen landeskirchlichen Maßstab in Bezug auf das Verhältnis zum Staat aufstellten und pflegten. Völlige Geschlossenheit erreichte die mecklenburgische Landeskirche jedoch nicht. Ausdruck dessen sind zahlreiche Inoffizielle Mitarbeiter des Ministeriums für Staatssicherheit, die auf den verschiedenen innerkirchlichen Ebenen Informationen beschafften und verdeckt auf innerkirchliche Entscheidungen Einfluss nahmen. Adolf Wagner, Gauleiter, Innen- und Kultusminister in Bayern, war ein Bahnbrecher bei der Errichtung des Konzentrationslager-Systems und Schrittmacher sowohl bei der Ausschaltung der Gewerkschaften als auch bei der Vernichtung der wirtschaftlichen Existenz der jüdischen Bevölkerung. Auch die Morde an behinderten Menschen administrierte sein Innenministerium mit. Die Kriegsvorbereitungen im Rahmen des zweiten Vierjahresplans 1936-1939 verstärkte er in einer bis dahin unvergleichlichen Ästhetisierungsoffensive. Dazu dienten die Ausstellungen "Der ewige Jude", "Die antibolschewistische Schau", "Die entartete Kunst" und "Die Schönheit der Arbeit beim Leistungskampf der Betriebe". Wagners Eifer galt der »Menschenführung«, der Enthemmung und Leistungsmaximierung für den Krieg. Die Studie zeichnet nach, wie aus dem Bergbaustudenten und Mitglied in einer schlagenden Verbindung an der RWTH Aachen der NS-Verbrecher wurde. Die wichtigsten Stationen seiner Karriere gingen Hand in Hand mit den entscheidenden Entwicklungsphasen des Nationalsozialismus. Seine Biografie ermöglicht gleichzeitig fundierte Einblicke in das Herrschaftsgefüge, die Funktionen und Netzwerke des NS-Staats.
