A near fine copy in the publisher's black boards, with a faint dampstain to the far bottom corner of the page block, affecting just the outer margins of the first several leaves. Some rubbing to extremities. In a near fine dust jacket, with some light edgewearm perhaps a tinge sunned on the spine. A fantastic copy, SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by Ihimaera on the half-title page in the year of publication: "For our dear Hugh, on the occasion of your ra whanan. [two lines in Maori] Witi. New York '87." Ihimaera was the first Maori novelist to achieve mainstream popularity outside New Zealand. The book was made into a widely popular 2002 film with the same title.
