"Tatiana du Plessix, the wife of a French diplomat, was a beautiful, sophisticated 'white Russian' who had been the muse of the famous Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. Alexander Liberman, the ambitious son of a prominent Russian Jew, was a gifted magazine editor and aspiring artist. As part of the progressive artistic Russian émigré community living in Paris in the 1930s, the two were destined to meet. They began a passionate affair, and the year after Paris was occupied in World War II they fled to New York with Tatiana's young daughter, Francine. There they determinedly rose to the top of high society, holding court to a Who's Who list of the midcentury's intellectuals and entertainers. Flamboyant and outrageous, bold and brilliant, they were irresistible to friends like Marlene Dietrich, Salvador Dalí, and the publishing tycoon Condé Nast. But to those who knew them well they were also highly neurotic, narcissistic, and glacially self-promoting, prone to cut out of their lives, with surgical precision, close friends who were no longer of use to them. Tatiana became an icon of New York fashion, and the hats she designed for Saks Fifth Avenue were de rigueur for stylish women everywhere. Alexander Liberman, who devotedly raised Francine as his own child from the time she was nine, eventually came to preside over the entire Condé Nast empire. The glamorous life they shared was both creative and destructive and was marked by an exceptional bond forged out of their highly charged love and raging self-centeredness. Their obsessive adulation of success and elegance was elevated to a kind of worship, and the high drama that characterized their lives followed them to their deaths. Tatiana, increasingly consumed with nostalgia for a long-lost Russia, spent her last years addicted to painkillers. Shortly after her death, Alexander, then age eighty, shocked all who knew him by marrying her nurse. Them: A Portrait of Parents is a beautifully written homage to the extraordinary lives of two fascinating, irrepressible people who were larger than life emblems of a bygone age. Written with honesty and grace by the person who knew them best, this generational saga is a survivor's story. Tatiana and Alexander survived the Russian Revolution, the fall of France, and New York's factory of fame. Their daughter, Francine, survived them. / Francine du Plessix Gray is a regular contributor to The New Yorker and the author of numerous essays and books, including Simone Weil, At Home with the Marquis de Sade: A Life, Rage and Fire, Lovers and Tyrants, and Soviet Women. MANET By Claudia Lyn Cahan. With 61 plates in full colour. The superbly reproduced colour plates in this volume tell the visually exciting story of a painter who became, however, unwillingly, one of the founding fathers of modern art. Edouard Manet stands as a figure apart in the history of painting. Though seen in his own time as the leader of the Impressionists, he refused that designation, as he did all other labels for his work. In the face of almost constant criticism and rejection, he employed new techniques to portray subject matter that shocked equally the viewing public and the art establishment. Manet carried artistic tradition along new pathways, in time revolutionizing both the concept of beauty and the role of painting. Among the works in this volume is Dejeuner sur 1'Herbe, the famous painting that set Paris agog in 1863. The official art critics, scandalized, refused to recognize this portrayal of a nude woman picnicking with two gentlemen fully clad in fashionable dress, and the controversy became a motivating factor in the formation of the Salon des Refuses and a rallying point for the young independent artists in their revolt against academic painting. In the middle of the nineteenth century, France was alive with social and economic changes that were reflected in its cultural life. Manet, a product of the rapidly expanding bourgeoisie, wanted to record the new sense of excitement and joy of life as it was expressed by people of his own class. He saw his age filled with movement and pleasure and, like the Impressionists, wanted to capture that, to paint the moment of reality he saw before him. After six years of academic training, he began to depict not the mythological and historical scenes that tradition required but his own compeers as they boated, picnicked, listened to concerts, or sat at the beach. ., Avenel Books, 1980, 3, William C Brown Pub, July, 1990. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Here is a swift-moving, sophisticated novel about eternal problems - the conflict between generations, between sexes, between values - placed firmly within the context of contemporary life. In an old-fashioned society such as that of Lisbon today, can a modern twentieth-century young man break away from the pattern preordained by his parents? The wealthy Goncalo is intelligent enough to understand the rebellious inclinations of his student son Pedro, and cynical enough to know exactly how far they can be allowed to run. In the same way, he knows just how much independence he can allow his mistress Alexandra and his wife Teresa without his own smooth and passionless life being ruffed. His dingy old acquaintance Antonio may provide pinpricks of annoyance; but Goncalo's self-confidence seems invulnerable. inventory #34271, 0, . Copies came to America, and in the middle of the 1830s, it was issued by Munroe and Francis of Boston, in a redesigned, Americanized edition. The resulting book went through several printings without internal alteration. Among the legendary books of early American childhood is Marmaduke Multiply. Prepared as a fellow volume to Peter Piper, it teaches the multiplication table by means of catchy rhymes and engaging woodcuts. An early 19th century anticipation of Sesame Street, it remains one of the pleasantest and most engaging of early children's books. This reprint of Murmaduke Multiply reproduces the Munroe and Francis edition, the first American version of the rhymes. Designed and illustrated by Alonzo Hartwell it first appeared in the middle 1830's. Through succeeding editions, up until the 1870's, it was a favorite means of affording combined instruction and entertainmemt to young America. Today Marmaduke Multiply can still be used for its original amusememt and instruction purposes, but, with its quaint woodcuts and loaded rhymes, it has the added value of showing the mind of America in the days of the not so old-fashioned schoolhouse. This reprint of the 1841 edition is illustrated with 71 woodcuts., Dover Publications, Inc, 1971, 3, NY: Faber & Faber. Good. 1987. First Edition. paperback. 10.7 X 8.2 X 0.7 inches. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 4 1/2" X 6 . Hartwell, Alonzo - Woodcuts. 103 Pages.Crease to back cover that runs vertically from top to bottom Originally published in England in 1816 by John Harris.
