Newman and Co., 1880. First Edition. Blue decorated cloth, stamped in black and gilt, all edges trimmed. Head and foot of spine rubbed and corners worn, title-page browned except opposite facing errata slip (giving an oddly striped effect), but a very good copy of a vulnerable book. Initialled by the author at bottom left of title as usual, but the initials virtually obscured by end-paper: see below. Other copies seen have untrimmed edges, an orthodox half-title and 10pp. of reviews of 'Mr. Payne's Works'. This is a curious variant, with the half-title, which formed part of the last signature, uncancelled at end, together with two further leaves, printed on rectos only, one headed 'Opinions of the Press on Mr. Payne as a Poet', the other advertising R.H. Horne's Laura Dibalzo. The errata slip too is usually absent; its inept insertion is apparently responsible for the adhesion at the gutter of the title-page and end-paper. Initialled by the author at foot of title as usual, and with a signed autograph presentation inscription from Payne to J.J.
